Just north of
Merritt in the High Country region is Nicola, a community surrounded by green fields and marshes. The area was originally settled by ranchers who recognized its potential for supporting cattle, and today, real cowboys ride one of the largest working cattle ranches in North America, Douglas Lake Ranch.
Other attractions in the area include the Spius Creek Salmon Hatchery, local sawmill tours, interpretive forest walks, the Nicola Valley Museum Archives, the Quilchena Hotel (est. 1908), and the frequently photographed Murray Church (est. 1876).
