The seat of Phillips County, Malta is located 70 miles east of Chinook on US 2 on the banks of the Milk River near Lake Boudoin and Hewitt Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Home of ranchers, wildlife and outdoor recreation, Malta's area of US 2, is known in Montana as the Hi-Line. The Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge and Nelson Reservoir are nearby, as well as Phillips County Historical Museum.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 2,209, a decrease of 131 since 1990.
