Allamuchy, which means "place within the hills," was named after Chief Allamuchahokkingen, a leader of the local Lenape Indians. The town is located in Warren County north of Hackettstown, in the Skylands Region, along Highway 517 near Cranberry Lake. Allamuchy is part of the Newark, New Jersey metro area.

Allamuchy Mountain State Park is located 3 miles north of Hackettstown, and Stephens State Park is located 2 miles north of this town. Also there is Morristown National Historic Park, Hopatcong State Park, and Waterloo Village surrounding Allamuchy.

If museums are more interesting than parks, then there is the Franklin Mineral Museum, Sterling Hill Mining Museum, and Warren County Museum.
