This community is located in Clackamas County 13 miles south of Portland, next to sister cities Gladstone and West Linn along I-205. Positioned at the final destination of the Oregon Trail, Oregon City is also found to the south of the Clackamas River, on the Willamette River's east bank, where the river plunges 40 feet over a basaltic ridge at Willamette Falls. Mount St Helens can be seen on a clear day.
The Hudson's Bay Company built three log cabins here in 1828-1829. Established in 1829, Oregon City incorporated in 1844, and became the capitol of the Oregon Territory in 1849. Several of Oregon's prominent early residents built homes here and walking or driving tours are available.
Recreational opportunities include Fishing, Boating and River Tours, swimming and golfing.
Oregon City is part of the Portland-Vancouver, Oregon-WA metro area.
