James Monroe was born in 1758, in Westmoreland County VA as was George Washington. He entered the College of William and Mary in 1774, but left to fight in the American Revolution. After the war, he opposed ratification of the constitution because it lacked a bill of rights. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1790. He served twice as governor of Virginia, and was also a diplomat. He was elected President in 1816 and re-elected in 1824 with all but one vote in the Electoral College. The best known achievement of his administration was the Monroe Doctrine, which opposed European intervention in Western Hemisphere affairs. After leaving the presidency, he retired to his home in Oak Hill, Virginia, and later to , which opposed European intervention in Western Hemisphere affairs.
