Cantwell is located in Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area just south of Denali National Park and Preserve. This town along the Alaska Railroad was named for an early government agent. It is 1.8 miles west of the Parks Hwy at the end of the Denali Hwy. The town caters to tourists and local residents.
Cantwell is also the former name of the Nenana River. It was a railroad flag stop between Seward on the Prince William Sound and Fairbanks on the Chena River. The Alaska Railroad serves Cantwell several times a week during the summer.
