This 152 mile paved road connects Haines at the head of the Lynn Canal with the Alaska Hwy at Haines Jct YT. The highway is open all year, but motorists are urged to call 867-667-8215 for the daily recorded road condition report.
The scenic road leaves Haines, which is a stop on the Alaska Marine Highway, and goes through the Chilkat Eagle Bald Eagle Preserve over the St. Elias Mountain Range down into the Yukon basin. The road, finished in 1943, was an alternate route to the Yukon.
It follows an old Indian route developed by Jack Dalton to provide packhorse access to the Klondike gold fields. There is an international bicycle race at the end of June. Dalton Trail Days is celebrated at the beginning of July.
