Kennicott is an old copper mining town located next to the Kennicott Glacier in the heart of the Wrangell-St Elias NP and Preserve. The town is a National Historic Site.
Until it closed in 1938, the Kennecott Copper Mine (note the different spelling) was the richest copper mine in the world.
Some tourism related businesses have opened in the old ghost town, which is 4.5 miles after the town of McCarthy at the end of the old CR&NW railroad tracks leading out of Chitina.
