Located in southcentral Alaska, this area is the northern Gulf of Alaska. The area includes the Columbia Glacier (the main attraction), Whittier, Valdez, and Cordova.
The area is rich in wildlife, such as Dall sheep, mountain goats, bald eagles, harbor seals, whales, sea otters and seabirds. The waters are teeming with all species of salmon, crab, halibut and rockfish.
The Alaska Railroad operates a shuttle to Whittier from Portage. In addition, there are myriad fly and cruise sightseeing tours available.
