Helen Keller, one of Northwest Alabama's most famous citizens was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Helen Keller Hospital located in Sheffield, Alabama, is a 185 bed, not-for-profit community hospital governed by the Northwest Alabama Health Care Authority, a nine-member board comprised of local leaders appointed by the Colbert County Commission. Over 100 physicians are on active staff at Keller with more than 25 specialties represented at this full service hospital which provides medical care for the areas of Northwest Alabama and Northeast Mississippi.
Helen Keller Hospital has provided quality healthcare to the community since 1921 when the City of Sheffield and Colbert County governments pooled their resources to purchase the 25 bed New Belmont Hospital. The facility was at that time located in a two-story building in downtown Sheffield.
Helen Keller Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation Health Care Organizations.
