Biosphere 2 was privately constructed in the late 1980s to discover if eight people could sustain themselves in a sealed, energy-rich environment. The first two-year mission began in September 1991 and was followed by a second, shorter mission in 1993-1994. In addtion to research and education, the Biosphere 2 Center offers visitor services on its campus that encompasses over 250 acres of beautiful Sonoran Desert. A 27-room hotel and conference center sits on a hill over looking the Biosphere 2 facility where guests and groups can stay. The Caada del Oro Restaurant offers unique cuisine and beverages with spectacular mountain and city views. Each fall and spring semester, undergraduate students from across the United States live and study on the Biosphere 2 campus for a unique educational experience. Biosphere 2 is open from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. daily for tours, excluding Christmas Day, December 25th. Admission is charged.
