The London Bridge that once spanned the famed Thames River in London now crosses a manmade channel of the Colorado River in the Arizona desert. The bridge was bought by Robert McCulloch and he paid for the 140-year old London Bridge to be brought to the Arizona desert.
In the late '60s, the London Bridge was sinking into the clay of London, England's Thames River. Built in 1831, it was the victim of its own immense weight. McCulloc purchased the falling bridge for $2.4 million. At the time it was the highest price ever paid for an antique.
The London Bridge is one of Arizona's biggest attractions. Town visitors can explore a one-acre London village at the foot of the old bridge.
The channel where the bridge is located created an island that contains recreational facilities, including a golf course, a marina and a campground.
