Chartered in London in 1670, the company has been responsible for the exploration and settlement of much of Canada. In British Columbia, the company's fur traders made many contacts with the Natives and several of British Columbia's cities were first established as Hudson's Bay Company trading posts. The company, better known today simply as "The Bay," operates a number of department stores in urban areas today.
