The word "karst" originates from the Karst Plateau in Slovenia, a region characterized by deep gulleys, caves, sinkholes and underground drainage, all the result of carbonation-solution of limestone. The word is now generally applied to any area exhibiting these features. There are such areas on Vancouver Island, including Clayoquot Plateau Provincial Park.
