The caverns at Hotton are renowned for the spectacular variety of color in the rock formations -- the sections close to the surface have been nicknamed The Crystal Palace . It used to be that those were the only accessible parts of the underground system, but other sections have recently been opened up, and it is now possible to descend low enough to see the underground river and lakes at the bottom. A lift carries visitors out at the end of the tour. The Hotton Caves are also called The Caves of 1001 Nights , though it is not clear why.
