The initial collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Gent came from artwork confiscated from abolished religious institutions during the French revolution, and redistributed to regional museums. The current collection contains paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and drawings from the 14th century forwards. Approximately 350 items are on display at any one time, arranged in chronological order. The most spectacular items in the Museum's posession are two masterpieces by Hieronymous Bosch, Christ Carrying the Cross and St. Jerome In Prayer.
The Museum of Fine Arts is complemented by the Museum of Contemporary Art - S.M.A.K., also known by its Dutch acronym S.M.A.K., located a few steps away.
