Concord, California is located 35 miles east of San Francisco, adjacent to beautiful Mount Diablo. The city covers 30.68 square miles and is the largest city in Contra Costa County and is in between San Francisco and Sacramento on Highway 680 where it intersects with Highway 4. The towns of Richmond and Antioch are nearby.
A small tribe of Chupcan (Bay Miwok) Indians were the first inhabitants of the Diablo Valley. In 1772 Spanish explorers, led by Captain Pedro Fages and Father Juan Crespi, became the first outsiders to cross this area. They were travelling from Mission San Jose toward what is now Martinez and on to what is now Sacramento. By 1879, a population of 300 was reported. It would double by February 1905, when incorporation of the "Town of Concord" was approved by a local two-vote margin.
This flat and featureless East-Bay community shares the valley with the cities of Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek.
There is also a Concord, Massachusetts.
Concord is part of the Oakland, California metro area.
