Eden Medical Center opened its doors on November 14, 1954, in the midst of the Baby Boom. In the late 1940s throughout the state of California, hospital districts were established to fund and build hospitals to care for residents in rural areas. As a result, the Eden Township Hospital District, a legal and political entity, was established in 1948 by a vote of the residents of the Eden Township to build and operate Eden Hospital. Today, the District comprises the cities and unincorporated areas of Hayward, San Leandro, Castro Valley, and San Lorenzo, and includes more than 320,000 residents. Since 1954, more than 68,000 babies have been born at Eden, and the hospital has grown far beyond the "baby hospital" it once was. With responsible investment in medical technology and highly skilled staff, Eden Medical Center has has emerged as a leader in providing advanced medical care in a community setting.
