The 18th of the Spanish Missions established in California, this was one of the largest in Alta California. Founded in 1798 by Father Fermin de Lasuen, it was named for King Louis IX of France.

The mission features a splendid sanctuary interior with wooden double-dome construction and lofty beamed ceilings. Included in the mission museum are artifacts from 18th and 19th century mission life.

The mission and museum are open daily except New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
