It was in 1971 that the name Silicon Valley was used for the first time. Originally the term was used only to describe Santa Clara County but later on the area, as Carolyn E. Tajnaj (1985) described it, "Located on the San Francisco, California, peninsula, radiates outward from Stanford University. It is contained by the San Francisco Bay on the east, the Santa Cruz Mountains on the west, and the Coast Range to the southeast." Santa Clara is the center of Silicon Valley where today's high tech and computer industry marvels abound.
