The city was officially incorporated on March 9, 1921 and named after the Mission Nuestra Senora de la Soledad. Soledad meaning "solitude."
Soledad is located in Monterey County south of Salinas between Salinas and King City along US Highway 101 on the banks of the Salinas River near the Los Padres National Forest and the Pacific Ocean.
