The first known inhabitants of the Walnut Creek area were Bolbones Indians. In March 1772, the first Spanish explorers arrived to the region. Walnut Creek was first known as "The Corners" -- where the two roads leading from Martinez & San Jose and Oakland converge. Early European residents planted many groves of walnut trees there. The town got its modern name from the creek that runs through the area and the groves of walnut trees. The walnut industry continued well into the 1960's but met its demise as the population grew. Now a thriving suburban hub surrounded by huge tracts of California Ranch Style homes, Walnut Creek, still a "Crossroads" is bound to be the urban center of the Diablo Valley. Guests in Walnut Creek can choose from a delightful range of hotels and motels. A world-class arts center and the chance to participate in a wide range of arts programs. Walnut Creek is located in Contra Costa County 30 miles east of San Francisco between Concord and Oakland along Interstate 680 at Highway 24. Walnut Creek is part of the Oakland, California metro area.

California Exposition & State Fair Sacramento CA June12-28 The Cal Expo is the site of the California State Fair. All year Satellite Wagering, Waterworld USA, Paradise Island Fun Center and an RV Park are just a few of the features of the Cal Expo.The first State Fair was held in 1854 in San Francisco at the old Music Hall. The fair offered premiums (prizes) for its competitions and included such agricultural exhibits such as 2-inch-long peanuts, 72-pound beets and a 10-pound carrot that was longer than 3 feet. Horseracing was part of that first fair and has continued to be a part of the fair ever since.
