The railroad, built in the 1880s, connected commercial outposts and mining camps in the Rocky Mountain region. All-day trips on the old, narrow-gauge, coal-burning steam trains afford spectacular views of the rugged San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges. Osier, inaccessible by car, is the transfer point for those returning by motor coach as well as the turnaround point for passengers making the round trip to their point of origin. Food is available. The train departs daily at 10am from Antonito and at 10:30am from Chama, Memorial Day weekend to mid-October. All excursions return to Antonito about 5pm, and to Chama about 4:30pm; reservations are suggested.
