This small farming community is situated on the far eastern side of the San Luis Valley. The historic fort was built in 1858 to protect the valley. A nearby natural feature includes the Great Sand Dunes National Monument, about one half-hour north. Fort Garland is just east of Alamosa on Hwy 160.
