On the southern edge of metropolitan Denver, Littleton was settled in the 1860s by farmers homesteading the fertile land along the South Platte River. Kettering Lake and Park afford opportunities for picnicking and fishing, and Chatfield State Park, a few miles south, is a popular summer recreation spot. Roxborough State Park offers scenic hiking trails that allow for cross-country skiing in winter.

A cultural center includes a museum with over 30,000 historic artifacts, a research library, and living history farms featuring on-site interpreters.

Littleton is part of the Denver, Colorado metro area.
