The San Juan Mountains are considered by some to be the largest single distinct mountain system in the U.S. They encompass more than 10,000 square miles. This mountain system lies in southwestern Colorado. Mesa Verde National Park is just one of the Parks in the San Juan Mountain Range and offers abundant archeological sites.
The U.S. Department of Transportation designated The San Juan Skyway the "All American Highway" and it is a popular scenic drive. Most of the San Juan Mountains are under the authority of the San Juan, Rio Grande and Uncompaghre districts of the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.
