Established in 1791, Georgetown is located in the center of Sussex County, of which it is the county seat, along US Highway 9 near Redden State Forest. It is an old agriculturally based community featuring hospitality, nice beaches and growing industries. The people of Georgetown speak with a distinct accent.
A walking tour of historic Georgetown is available and the community is home to the Nutter D. Marvel Museum. A memorial to the fallen soldiers of the Civil War and later wars stands at the south side of the Courthouse.
The University of Delaware and a branch of Delaware State University are located in Georgetown.
