This site features the ruins of what was once the country's largest private house, the palace of William Paulet, 1st Marquess of Winchester and Lord Treasurer of England under 3 Tudor monarchs. The ruins cover about 10 acres; of interest are Norman earthworks, the remains of Tudor kitchens, cellars, towers, a 300-ft-long tunnel, an outstanding barn, Civil War defences designed by Inigo Jones, and a recently re-created 16th-17th century formal garden. Special events are hosted from time to time. Gift shop, limited refreshments on site; parking available. Open April-September.
