The Birmingham Botanical Gardens were opened in 1832. They were designed by leading garden planner, horticultural journalist and publisher, JC Loudon. Today, the gardens offer a superb opportunity for recreation close to the center of Birmingham. The Main Lawn is an amphitheatre; lawn features ornamental trees, Victorian Bandstand, Analematic Sundial. Historic Gardens illistrate typical British period gardens; also Roman Garden, Medieval Garden, Alpine Yard, Herbaceous Border, Rock Garden & Waterfall, Rhododendron Garden, Rose Garden, Cottage Museum & Garden, Tudor Garden and 19th-century Glasshouses.
