When the German blitz was striking London, Winston Churchill, his Cabinet, his Chiefs of Staff, and his intelligence chiefs were meeting below ground in a fortified basement in Whitehall known as the Cabinet War Rooms. The facilities were hastily constructed as war approached, to provide the Prime Minister, his War Cabinet, and his staff with a place to work, sleep, and live for as long as necessary.
When peace came, the lights which had burned constantly for six years were switched off. Today, visitors can visit the rooms and see them as they were during the height of the combat. The Cabinet War Rooms are a branch of the Imperial War Museum.
