Durham is regarded as the most dramatic cathedral city in
Britain. The Durham Cathedral is listed in World Heritage
as the most complete Norman cathedral and stands high above
a wooded bluff on the Wear River. Durham is home to the
third-oldest University in England, founded in 1832. Durham
Castle dates from 1093 and served as the home for the
prince-bishops of the city. The Castle is now a residential
college for the main University. Durham is located in
Northeast England, near York and a 3-hour train ride
from London.
