Search Visit

George II belonged to the House of Hanover. Born in 1683, he ascended to the throne in 1727 and died in 1760. She was preceded as monarch by George I and was succeeded by George III.

Like his father, George II was elector of Hanover as well as king of England, and like his father showed favor to Hanover, but he devoted more attention to England. On his ascension, he dismissed Walpole but soon restored him to power under the influence of Queen Caroline. In the War of the Austrian Succession, George II personally led British and Hanoverian troops to victory over a French army at the Battle of Dettingen, the last time a British sovereign appeared in action. During his reign, the last Jacobite uprising was crushed at Culloden. The Seven Years War broke out in 1756 and its successful conclusion raised Britain to new heights of international power. George's favorite son Frederick preceded him in death, and he was succeeded by his grandson, George III.
