Peterborough is situated in Cambridgeshire on the Nene, 76 miles northwest of London by rail. The town grew up around a Benedictine monastery founded in 655 and destroyed in 870 by the Danes. On the site of the monastery, a 10th-century Saxon church was built, which was destroyed by fire in 1116. The great cathedral of Peterborough was founded on the same site, most of it being completed before 1200. In the cathedral, Cathering of Aragon and Mary Queen of Scots were interred, the latter being removed to Westminster Abbey in 1612.
