One of London's most heavily trafficked squares is built
around Nelson's Column, a 145 foot high monument bearing a
17-foot statue that honors Lord Horatio Nelson, who won the
Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. At the base are four bronze
lions and two fountains. The National Gallery and Church of
the St. Martin are located within the square, which is also
known as a favorite gathering place for political rallies,
tourists and pigeons.
