Edgewater is located in Volusia County south of New Smyrna Beach off of US Hwy 1 at the edge of the Indian River. This community is also situated at the Atlantic coastline. Edgewater is part of the Daytona Beach, Florida metro area.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 17,757, an increase of 2,406 since 1990.
There is also an Edgewater, Maryland.
Originally called Hawk's Park, the settlement was established in 1871. Within fifteen years it had 115 permanent residents and was a favorite of northerners who would stay the winter. By 1925 the community adopted the name of Edgewater and was beginning to grow in earnest.
Today, Edgewater is still a small town by most standards. Some of the businesses calling Edgewater home are paint, building, boating, garment and honey industries.
