Gainesville is located in Alachua County (is the county seat), southwest of Jacksonville between Lake City and Ocala along Interstate 75 near Newmans Lake. Home of the University of Florida campus. There is also a Gainesville, Texas. Gainesville is part of the Gainesville, Florida metro area. Gainesville, home of Florida's largest and oldest university, is one of the state's centers of education, medicine, cultural events and athletics. It's hard to not notice that aquatics-related activities are typical of a Gainesville's citizen's life. Justifiably so: of it's 965 square miles, more than one in twenty is covered in water, as well as the beaches of two coasts that are quick to access.
