Hontoon Island State Park

Search DeLand Florida

This 1,650-acre island has served as home to an extinct civilization, a center for commercial fishing, and a cattle ranch in times past; today it is a paradise for fishing, camping, hiking, boating, canoeing, and nature study.

The park, accessible only by boat or ferry service only, features a 3-mile self-guided trail which begins at the ranger station and follows Huntoon Dead River to the large Indian mound at the southwest corner of the island, as well as 5 miles of service roads which are ideal for bicycling. Ferry service to/from the island is available until 1 hour before sundown only.

A bird's-eye view of the island can be enjoyed from an 80-ft observation tower located near the picnic area; playground equipment and a restroom area can also be found in the picnic area. Fishing is permitted from the island's banks, or canoes may be rented at the park; camping facilities ranging from tent campsites to cabin rentals are available.
