Indian Shores is located in Pinellas County just northwest of St Petersburg between Clearwater and Redington Beach off of Hwy 19 near the Gulf of Mexico. Indian Shores is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida metro area. Indian Shores' first "settlers" were a pair of brothers by the name of Cochran. In 1883 four Cedar Key speculators sailing to St. Petersburg, stopped to explore the Island. They were fascinated by the Island's possibilities for future development and bought it from the Cochran Brothers for a nominal sum. It is said the brothers bartered their Island "for little more than a string of beads and $25.00, figuratively speaking, like the Indians of Manhattan".
