Named for the editorial cartoonist and pioneer conservationist. The refuge encompasses more than 6,000 acres of wetlands and island uplands on the north side of the island. Facilities include canoe trails, birdwatching tower, wildlife drive, interpretive trail, and marinas. A list of more than 200 bird species that can be viewed is available from the headquarters at the refuge entrance. Refuge open Saturday-Thursday, 7:30am to 30 minutes before dusk. Visitor center open Saturday-Thursday, 9am-5pm, November-April; 9am-4pm the rest of the year. JN "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge Drive open Saturday-Thursday, dawn to dusk.
