The Historical Society is headquartered in the 102-year-old Palm Cottage, the second-oldest house in Collier County as well as one of the few remaining tabby-built buildings in Florida. The historic Vernacular-style house was built in 1895 for Henry Watterson, the famous editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal. The walls are constructed of tabbie mortar, a primitive form of concrete made from local materials. The making of tabbie mortar entails a process of burning seashells over buttonwood at an intensely high heat, then mixed with lime and seawater to produce the mortar. Palm Cottage has been placed on the state register of historic sites, as well as having been included in the prestigious National Register of Historic Places.
