This is a small village-type museum relating the history of the turn-of-the-century residents of Sanibel Island through photographs and documents, as well as the Calusa Indians and the island's Spanish period; archaeological finds examine the island's prehistory. The museum's collection takes in five buildings, including a period Sanibel cracker-style house which originally belonged to Clarence Rutland, an island resident and assistant keeper of the lighthouse in 1916 (later becoming its official keeper), and the recently-added 1898 Burnap Cottage. Housed within the cottage are mementos of the Sanibel Lighthouse and the first churches on the island. A 1926 Model T pickup truck, packing house, and a vegetable garden add color to the collection. Museum hours vary seasonally, call for current schedule.
