The scene of the Allied invasion of Europe in World War II, Normandy is located in NW France, bordering the English Channel. In addition to a number of WWII sites, Normandy offers visitors 600 kms of coastline, agriculturally rich countryside and forests of beech and pine. The region is home to many sites that inspired the Impressionistic painter Claude Monet, including the gardens at Giverny and Rouen's Gothic Notre Dame cathedral. Heading west toward the border of Brittany visitors will find one of the region's most impressive attractions, the 14th-century abbey of Mont St-Michel. Notable local products include Camembert and Calvados.
