Hazlehurst is located in Jeff Davis County, of which it is the county seat, southwest of Savannah between McRae and Alma along Highway 23 on the banks of the Ocmulgee River in the Historic South Region of the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 4,228, an increase of 26 since 1990. Hazlehurst was named after George H. Hazlehurst, railroad surveyor.
