Haleakala Hwy (Hwy 377)

Search Visit Hawaii

This road starts in Kahului - Maui as Hwy 37 and becomes Hwy 377, the Haleakala Hwy. It starts at sea level and goes up to 10,000 feet in 38 miles, taking about two hours. Early morning is better because rain clouds condense from about 11am onward.

Extreme gusty winds, heavy rain and even snow in the winter months are possible. There is at least a 30 degree difference in temperature. The highway winds through spectacular upcountry farms and scenic areas on the way to the "house of the sun".

Upcountry towns along Hwy 377 include Kula, Makawao and Waiakoa.
