In 1983, the Sisters of St. Francis recognized the growing need for quality healthcare in West Oahu due to its burgeoning population and began planning for the health concerns of the area's residents. The seven-year dream for a major medical complex in Ewa was realized with the opening of St. Francis Medical Center-West in April 1990. The 24-acre campus features an acute-care medical center, a medical office plaza, a satellite renal dialysis center, a Clinical Service Center, and a 24-bed Hospice that was completed in November 1997. St. Francis Medical Center-West prides itself in continuing to add new clinical services. Its 24-hour Emergency Room is one of the busiest on Oahu, complete with a helipad to facilitate the rapid transport of patients. It pioneered in bringing infusion services to West Oahu as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and radiation therapy, thus saving residents the inconvenience of traveling to Honolulu for these services.
