The Southwest Region of Iowa was first settled by Swedish immigrants, Morman pioneers and French colonists. One claim to fame of the area is that the town of Clarinda was the birth place of Glenn Miller, the founder of the Glenn Miller Orchestra and popular hit maker of the Swing Era. The home where he was born has been restored with furnishings from that period and is open for visitors.

Other attractions of the region include fishing for walleye and bass on the silver lakes, hunting for pheasants, hiking the Loess Hills, and attending Sidney's Championship Rodeo.
