The first road across the mountains was built by John Mullan from Missoula MT to Coeur d'Alene. The route roughly parallels the present-day Interstate 90.
A series of John Mullan Statues lie along the 624-mile stretch of this road that crosses Idaho's Panhandle. Lt. John Mullan led both civilian and military crews from 1859 to 1862 in the construction of the trail that now bears his name.
