Buncombe is located in southern Illinois northwestern Johnson County about 20 miles south of Marion and just minutes south of the Shawnee National Forest and Ferne Clyffe State Park about equidistant between Interstate 57 and Interstate 24. Area recreation also includes trips to Lake of Egypt, Crab Orchard Lake & NWR and Giant City State Park all with 20 miles to the north and northwest of town. In addition, the Ohio River, known for its catfishing, is about 20 miles south of town.
