Carthage is located in western Illinois in Hancock County (of which it is the county seat) northwest of Springfield along U.S. Highway 136 about 10 miles east of the Mississippi River.

Those that enjoy the outdoors will want to take in Nauvoo State Park, 15 miles to the northwest, and Argyle Lake State Park, about 20 miles to the east. In addition, golfers will be drawn to Carthage Golf Course for a quick round.

Carthage is the home of the annual "Straberry Festival" held the 1st Friday and Saturday of June. Highlights include the "Little Miss Strawberry Blossom" pageant, the "Strawberry Strut", front porch decorating contest, hog roast and a classic car show.

The population estimate for July 1, 2002 was 2,725, an increase of 229 since 1998.
