Elizabethtown is located in southern Illinois in Hardin County (of which it is the county seat) along SR 146 overlooking the Ohio River about 10 miles west of Cave-in-Rock State Park. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 408, a decrease of 19 since 1990. Recreation is practically right out the front door as the town is within the boundaries of the Shawnee National Forest.
